It’s been a few years since I’ve done this, but I think now is the perfect time to do it again.
Everyone who’s known me more than a little while will agree that the past few years has been a period of growth for me – I’ve put down roots at an awesome church, grown closer to God, been blessed with an amazing woman to share my life with, been given a great job, bought myself a new car, had a daughter, started my own business and bought a house for my family.
I’d love to be able to take credit for all that, but to be honest, I wouldn’t be where I am now without the help of the people around me. So, credit where credit is due, I’d like to thank those who have helped me over the last couple of years:
Where do I start? The encouragement you’ve given me has been amazing. You’ve built me up when I needed it, and you’ve stopped me from getting ahead of myself too. You’ve put up with the craziest of my ideas, and managed to survive being married to a geek, all the while loving me. You’ve given up your time to stay home, raise and love our little Mack-ness Monster. You’ve made a house a home, place worth coming home to every evening after work. The love you’ve shared with me is greater than I ever thought possible. Thank you for everything Sammy. I love you more than words could ever say.
I know you can’t read yet, but you’re still awesome. You’ve taught me so many things in such a short time, least of which is how quickly a 2 foot tall toddler can cover 30 metres when her father’s back is turned. You have brought immeasurable joy into our house. I love you my little angel!
Thank you for everything you’ve done over the years. The support, advice, and assistance you have provided have been an absolute God-send. Thank you for babysitting Mackenzie, and helping with all the tax and business advice, and the list goes on. I know nothing I can say or do could ever repay all the effort you’ve put in to raising me, but thank you for being the best mother a geek could ever ask for!
Matt & Tara:
You might be on the other side of the world now, but the impact you’ve made on my life is still evident.
Matt, your strength of character and will to battle through whatever life throws at you are of mythical proportions. You simultaneously inspire me, and shame me, both of which I am grateful for.
Tara, you’ve put up with a tonne of grief from me over the years, and you’re still happy to offer whatever assistance you can. Your steadfast faith has been an example for me to follow. Thank you both for the amazing examples you have set, and the advice you have both provided.
Thank you for all your help, with advice, babysitting, or just lending a hand where you can. Your generosity and upbeat spirit are amazing, especially after some of the events from the past year. Thanks for everything baby Boof!
Otis & Kim:
Otis, we don’t chat nearly as often as I would like, but I really look up to you as an example of a great husband, an amazing father, and an all-round good guy, someone who has all his ducks in a row, and looks after his family well. Thank you for the advice you’ve given, and the example you have set.
Kim, you rock. There’s no doubt about it. You too have set an example for me, as someone who is level headed, fiercely protective of her family, and full of wisdom. There have been dozens of things you have said, mostly in passing, that have stuck with me, and are now part of my way of life. Thank you for the strong positive influence you’ve been.
Thank you all for inviting us in to your home when we visited New Zealand, and for taking us on a grand adventure while we were there.
Paul & Deb:
You’ve both been amazing parents-in-law. I know tradition says we aren’t supposed to get along, but you guys are wonderful. Your generosity, your hospitality, and your willingness to help are amazing. You’ve helped heaps in getting each house we’ve lived in set up, and the effort you’ve put in to help turn our own house in to a home is incredible. Thank you for the love you pour out on us all every time you visit, for the warm open arms with which you welcome us every time we take the trip down south, and the love you share with Mackenzie when ever you’re together. You really are the best in-laws I could ever have hoped to have!
Lincoln & Sarah:
Lincoln, I’ve known you the longest of all the people I consider a friend today. It’s been 17 years since I met you when I started high school. In that time you’ve been a solid, dependable, sensible friend. You’ve given advice, assistance, support, and plenty of reality checks. You’ve been around for all the major milestones in my life so far – the only person not related to me by blood who can claim that. You’ve helped me move house more times than either of us would like to count, and each time with a joyful spirit. You’re the closest thing I have to a brother this side of the Tasman sea. Thank you for everything you’ve done.
Sarah, I hardly even knew you before you volunteered to help Sammy and me pack and move house, not once, but twice. You’ve won the heart of my best friend. If I knew nothing else about you, these things alone would tell me you’re awesome. But since then I’ve had the chance to get to know you better, and I am thankful for all you’ve done to help Sammy, Mackenzie, and me. You’re a wonderful person, and I am grateful to have you as a friend.
Paul & Jayne:
Paul, we’ve been through some rough patches together, but you’ve always come through for me when I needed you most. Without your encouragement and support, I wouldn’t have met Sammy. I’ve known you 15 years now, half my life, and in that time, you’ve helped me move house, build empires, and recover from immeasurable loss, all without asking for anything in return. Thank you for everything you’ve done.
Jayne, you’ve been the voice of reason during the rough patches I’ve been through with Paul, every time you’ve helped us both see that the differences we face aren’t as big as the common interests we share. I’ve known you for only slightly less time than Lincoln, and in that time you have been a shoulder to cry on a number of times. You have been a blessing just by listening while I unloaded my burdens. Thank you for your compassion and understanding.
Andy & Deb, Rob & Stacey, Sam & Jodi, Dave & Sarah, Ben & Charee, Alicia, Charmaine, Jess, Lynn
Your friendship, concern, faithful prayer, your kind words, encouragement, and love are greatly appreciated I don’t hang out with you all as much as I would like, but you have all played an important part in helping me get to where I am today. You’ve spoken words of wisdom in to my life, steered me away from foolishness with words of rebuke, and helped out in a hundred little ways that have not gone unnoticed. Thank you all.
To anyone I have missed, (and there will be many, as I didn’t want to spend a month writing this) thank you for all you have done to help me over the years. I appreciate the input each and every one of you has given. You are all saints in my eyes!
